A Letter from Janet Reilly

Dear District 2 Resident,

My name is Janet Reilly and I am running for supervisor in District 2. Over the last few months, I have had the opportunity to meet with various residents, civic groups and community leaders throughout the district. It has been an absolute pleasure to do so, and it would be an honor to serve as your representative at City Hall.

Over the years, the supervisor from District 2 has taken a keen interest in the city’s fiscal health and is often regarded as the board’s fiscal watchdog. Never before has this role been more important than today and I intend to continue this tradition.

In the wake of a devastating recession, my first priority is to return job growth to our city. I will work closely with business and labor leaders to ensure that San Francisco attracts new companies and helps existing businesses grow and thrive. Moreover, I will do everything I can to make city government an effective partner in businesses’ success, not an adversary.

This also means we must re-assess the way the city does business. In these challenging economic times, balancing the city’s $6.6 billion budget – while safeguarding and improving services – will be crucial to our recovery. We must ration our resources carefully and get the most out of every dollar spent. It’s time to take a careful look at our city budget to determine how to do more with less. Year-over-year revenue increases are a thing of the past.

Protecting District 2’s wonderful neighborhoods and incomparable network of parks and open spaces will be another priority for me. As residents of District 2, it is incumbent upon all of us to protect and maintain the magnificent natural environment around us. At the same time, we must strive to preserve the livability of our neighborhoods. For example, the growth of the Presidio as a National Park has impacted traffic and parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. Providing for the park’s continued popularity while protecting the quality of life around it will take hard work and vigilant oversight.

I believe residents will get more out of their public institutions if they enjoy a collaborative relationship with their elected officials. This requires an elected supervisor to broker solutions and to maintain clear lines of communication with residents. I plan to be as available as possible for neighbors to use my office as an advocate or mediator.

I will work diligently to find solutions to minimize any inconvenience to District 2 residents from the reconstruction of Doyle Drive. As a result of funds arranged by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Dianne Feinstein, Caltrans will completely rebuild the Doyle Drive entrance to the Golden Gate Bridge. As a Director of the Golden Gate Bridge Board for the last six years, I am carefully watching the project to ensure that this vitally necessary retrofit has the least negative impact on District 2 residents.

As the campaign for District 2 Supervisor progresses, I will continue to unveil my positions on other critical issues facing the district.

Thank you for visiting my website. It would be an honor to serve you and I welcome your ideas and aspirations for District 2.

Sincerely,

Janet Reilly
